A 31-year postgraduate trainee lady doctor was badly throttled, brutalized and raped before her bloodied body was found in the seminar room of Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College on 9th August. The widespread anger and nationwide protests from healthcare doctors’ associations from government-run hospitals across India stirred the top courts. The Indian CJ passed an order to establish a safety task force to bolster the security of healthcare medics. Indian Chief Justice DY Chandrachud called the murder details ‘’horrific’’.

The Indian CJ ordered authorities to establish a national-level task force of top doctors to prepare a comprehensive anti-violence plan in healthcare facilities under the enforceable national protocols to ensure secure working conditions. The Indian CJ reiterated saying that given the propensity of the tragedy and its consequences of national concern, the court had to intervene.

He further added that nation can’t wait for another rape to take stern actions for real improvements on the ground. On the other side, patients are suffering for treatment while Indian doctors protesting and mourning the heinous rape and homicide of the young medic.
