News Today:  Raging brutality to disperse hundreds of unarmed protesters, Indian police fired bursts of teargas and water cannons. These protestors peacefully marching in the eastern city of Kolkata demand the prompt resignation of the top state minister amid the horrendous rape and murder of a young trainee doctor. The August 9 planned attack on a doctor unleashed nationwide outrage, similar to the 2012 gang-rape incident of a 23-year-old student in New Dehli.

It came out with a high degree of anger across the nation, demanding strict actions against sexual violence. A police volunteer has been arrested suspected in the recent incident and given in the custody of the federal police for investigation. Junior doctors of India have categorically refused to attend to all non-emergency patients in various parts of the country since the brutal homicide incident at R.G. Kar Medical College.

The recent judicial development in the context of Kolkata’s murder case announced a hospital staff safety task force to dissipate protesters, but some have refused to budge. The protesting students from some universities are demanding the resignation of CM Mamta Banerjee, but the state government has denied it.
